Question 5B Midterm

Postby Jaime_Chamberlain_3G » Sun Nov 13, 2016 2:39 pm

For Q5B and C on the midterm, the question is "What is the subshell notation and the total number of orbitals having the quantum numbers n=3, l=2 for a given element?" How would you go about finding this answer? Thank you.

I think this is because n = 3 refers to the 3rd orbital. l = 2 refers to the d-orbital. So, the subshell notation becomes 3d orbital, and the d-orbital contains 5 orbitals. :)
