For those of you who haven't memorized the names of ligands yet, I made a quizlet.

Feel free to use the link above- so far I've only done the common ligands mentioned in the book, but I've been unable to incorporate subscripts and underlining into the flashcards. I tried to be as accurate and clear as possible. Hopefully, it helps more than it confuses you.

Re: Quizlet for the names of Common Ligands
Are we expected to have all of these memorized for quiz 3 and/or final?

I'm sure we need to know them for Quiz 3. I'm pretty sure we need to know them for the final too.

Re: Quizlet for the names of Common Ligands
Quick question, when naming the compounds, when do we use prefixes like bis- and suffixes like -ate for the anionic compounds?

Re: Quizlet for the names of Common Ligands
We use prefixes like bis-, tris-, etc when the ligand is a polydentate and we need to indicate the number of ligands. For example, (en)2 would be bisethylenediamine because en is a bidentate (it binds at two sites and donates two electron pairs) and there are two of that ligand (which is why it is bis-).
We use the suffix -ate at the end of the metal name if the complex has a negative charge. For example, [Ni(CN)4]2- would be tetracyano nickelate (II) since the charge of the complex is -2.

Links to external sites are a problem as link names change with time and then the link no longer works.
