Energy of a Gas?

Do we have to prove or remember the proofs for
Energies of ideal gases - (mono atomic - 3/2 nRT and diatomic - 5/2 nRT)?

When do we use these in thermodynamics?

I do not think we have to as I don't remember Lavelle discussing this. However, most formulas and proofs we have to know are given to us (you can check what is on there by looking at the periodic table that came with the course reader.)

He said in another post that derivations that he does in lecture are unlikely to come up on a test, but fair game. Mostly I would focus on remembering the parts of the formula and knowing when to apply 3/2 or 5/2 based on the problem.
