Quiz 1 Question 7 (increase in entropy)

Postby Erika Gonzalez 1F » Sun Jan 29, 2017 11:44 pm

Question 7 on Quiz 1 in the course reader (pg 114)
It is asking which of the processes leads to an increase in entropy.

I get the reason why 2 and 3 processes lead to an increase in entropy, but I don't get why 5 doesn't lead to an increase in entropy?

5) A glass of water loses 100 J of energy reversibly at 30 °C.

Can someone explain? thank you.

Because the glass of water is loosing 100J of energy and the change in S = Qrev/T, if Q decreases, then so does S because they're proportional.
