Questions about Electrophile and Nucleophile

Postby Michelle_Ahn_2N » Sat Feb 25, 2017 9:17 pm

I have two questions regarding Electrophile and Nucleophile !
What is the role that polarity plays in Electrophiles and Nucleophiles?
How much polar does the compound has to be in order to be electrophile or nucleophile?

Thanks in advance for your reply!

Nucleophilicty and electrophilicity are sliding scales of being a better nucleophile, thus a worse electrophile and vice versa. Every molecule can be classified somewhere along the scale of nucleophile and electrophile. Look at the general distribution of electrons (polarity) to see which way it's more likely to go (i.e. would it rather accept electrons or would it rather donate electrons), but there is no set point at which it becomes a nucleophile or electrophile.

Can you explain the above concept by providing an example to show how to differentiate the two? Thanks in advance.
