Identifying ambient nucleophiles

Postby Cerjay_Lugtu_3B » Mon Feb 27, 2017 8:56 pm

4.5 asks to identify the ambident nucleophile: (a)NH2CH3; (b)CH3O-; (c)SCN-; (d)-CH3. How do we identify the ambident structure? Do we have to draw Lewis diagrams?

An ambident nucleophile is a molecule that has more than one nucleophilic site and has a negative charge delocalized by resonance, so in order to identify the ambident structure you would need to know which molecules have resonance structures. If you are not able to identify from the chemical equation which ones have resonance, then you will have to draw the Lewis diagrams to determine which ones are ambident nucleophiles.

Oh ok I think I understand now. Thank you!
