### Practice Problems- Naming

For this one, I put 2-methylybutane. Is this wrong? If so, how would i know it's supposed to be isopentane.

And similarly, for this one I put 6-ethyl-2,3,4,5-tetramethylheptane.

### Re: Practice Problems- Naming

Hi,

neopentane is the common name where 2-methylbutane is the IUPAC name. They're the same structure.

For the second structure, what you have given (heptane) isn't right. The structure's backbone is an octane because the longest uninterrupted chain has 8 carbons.

Hope this helps.
