Naming of molecules

Postby JoseGonzalez_Lec2_2H » Tue Mar 07, 2017 1:59 pm

Can I use IUPAC prefixes and common names in the same naming of a molecule? Or, does it have to be all IUPAC or all common names?

I think it's just one or the other.

Yes! You actually can use both IUPAC and common naming for the same organic compound. We usually use common names with IUPAC naming to make the name look more concise. You will be able to find examples in the organic chemistry textbook under the section for common names.
