Thank you for offering all these review sessions! But will it also be released what the TAs will go over in session? Or will they just be going off of what students ask? Thanks again!

Re: Final Exam Details and Review Sessions Winter 2017
Many thanks to the students at the end of my office hour (5pm yesterday) who expressed appreciation for all the resources I provide students to assist them succeed.
Starting today there are 20-24 hours of review sessions over an 8 day period as I reserved each room for 3 hours each day to allow extra time. My Friday review is already set to the maximum hour and a half.
Took me about 4 hours to organize all this (reserve rooms, etc.). Try make as many as you can.
In addition to the review sessions the 'usual' weekly support is also offered week 10:
32 Office Hours per Week
28 Peer Learning Sessions per Week
Discussion Sections
And Chemistry Community where you can ask questions 24/7 right up the day of the final.
All questions posted by Sunday 1pm will be answered.
Make sure to thank your TAs and UAs for all their assistance.
For those interested also use the Math Assistance section on my class website including the math office hours.
The 15 page Kinetics file/link is another resource and the Redox Reactions section.
These are all on my class website:
https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/class-websites/chem14b/
The positive student feedback Friday and today (Saturday) will be an energy boost for my remaining lectures.
I look forward to high-energy interaction and enjoyment in our remaining time together!

Will alkenes and alkynes be considered as function groups for the final? Or is everything fair game where we have something like an alkyne with an alcohol functional group?

Yes you could have a double bond and a functional group. Functional group has priority.
More than one functional group will not be asked.

Not really. Fairly evenly distributed. We will spend 3-4 weeks on Organic Chemistry. Therefore about 1/3 on organic in the final.

I asked Bruincast to record and post it and they refused as they: "don't record review sessions"
I am in the process of organizing something. My wife's clinic just bought a new video camera and tripod. If it arrives in time that will be great. This all takes time as UCLA/Bruincast does not support this.

You will have to ask them. There are 15 TAs, it will likely vary from TA to TA. I cannot speak for all 15 TAs.
However most have indicated (see above) what they are doing.
They will definitely be open to questions while going through a problem, past exam question, etc., so do ask questions.

Professor Lavelle answered above that the final will by evenly distributed based on the time we spent on the each topic. OChem is about 1/3 of the final.

Problems: 1-16
We covered the Kinetics section earlier, as listed in the Syllabus:
Ch 4.1 to 4.4
Problems: 1-10, 23-40

I think it just makes things more organized the day of the final. Each assigned room makes it easier for Lavelle and the TAs to grade and input grades according to Discussion Section/Name.
Just think about the midterm setup :)

Is the test going to sometimes refer to organic compounds by their common name or always with the IUPAC name? In other words, are the common names just an aid at understanding IUPAC naming or are they primary for the test?

For question 3C from the winter 2016 final:
I assumed that AgBr would dissociate in solution, leaving Ag+ and Br-. Because of this, I wrote my cell diagram as Ag(s)|Ag+(aq)||Br-(aq)|Br2(g)|Pt(s)
Why is this incorrect? And why, in the correct answer, can you use Br-(aq) for the cathode but in the anode you had to use AgBr(s)? Thanks a bunch!(:

Because there won't be enough seats or exam copies for students going to the wrong room.

When asked to name a compound we will accept both common and IUPAC name.
The common names are an aid to understanding IUPAC naming of substituents.

How many review sessions do people recommend that we go to?

I would like to go to some review sessions, but I don't have any specific questions. Is there any value in attending review sessions to listen to other peoples' questions, or would studying alone be more productive?

Will the final be more heavily concentrated on material we learned in the 2nd half of the class? Or will there be a generally equal distribution of questions from the beginning of the quarter through now?

Will we need to know how to draw line structures with more than 1 functional group?

See examples in your lecture notes, past exams in the course reader, in the homework problems, and in the textbook.

No. Only one functional group.
[This question just won't go away no matter how many times I announce it or answer it. :-) ]

As I announced in class: drawing Newman projections and for the cycloalkanes drawing only the chair conformation for cyclohexane and substituted cyclohexanes.

Hey guys! I am filming the final review session but if anyone has a tripod and could bring it that would be super helpful for the quality and the easiness of doing it! Thank you!

According to Professor Lavelle, we will not need to know how to derive any equations on the final. It will focus primarily on problem solving.

Will we be given the strain/relative energies in order to calculate the ratio of the conformations? Because I don't think we ever explicitly went over how to find that...just how to find the ratio?

You would be given the relative energies.

We will have to know how to identify them in a structure. I'm not sure if we will have to draw them, but it would be safe to know how to.

Re: Final Exam Details and Review Sessions Winter 2017
Sorry if this has been asked before but for Q3 (E) on the 2014 practice final exam, why do we use logQ instead of lnQ within the Nerst Equation for this problem? is it because its at 25 degrees Celsius? and does the log and ln affect the Faraday constant "F" as well? Thanks for the help!

I think we are expected to know all four: anti, gauche, slightly eclipsed, and fully eclipsed.

Yes, we spent a lot of time on this in class. Conformational changes are highly relevant to biological molecules.

Correct. Another topic I covered in detail in class for several lectures.

Will the posts made before the actual final be considered for the "weekly online discussion," so would a question posted tonight count? Thanks!

Here is the final review session video. If you cannot see the video, that is okay. You will be able to soon. There were some technical difficulties, but Dr. Lavelle, Jonathan, and I are getting through it. Hopefully, the video the other student recorded will be posted soon as well.
