How are carbocations formed, exactly? If a hydrogen with a partial positive charge attaches to one carbon, how does another carbon end up as a cation?

The shared electrons of the double bond will attack a proton. The electrons are then put between the proton and one of the carbons. Now the second carbon has a dearth of negative charge. Previously, this was satisfied with the sharing of a pair of electrons between the two carbons, but now it is missing electron density. Thus it will have a positive charge associated with it.

Even though it seems like there should be a +2 charge due to the loss of two electrons, it is only a +1 formal charge when calculated.
