Conversion Shortcuts!

Postby Ben Rolnik 1D » Thu Jun 29, 2017 12:47 pm

Can you go straight from cm to mm using (10^-3 / 10^-2)... without having to convert to 1meter first?... and if so, does this change at all if you're dealing with units like cm^3?

Are there any shortcuts for these sorts of conversions?

Thanks!

Yes, you can convert directly from cm to mm by multiplying by 10^-1 !

However, conversions for measurements in 2 dimensions and 3 dimensions are not so straightforward. Take the following examples:

To convert 1 m^2 to cm^2:
1m2*(1002 cm2/1 m2)=10000 cm2

That is to say, 1m2 = 1002 cm2 !

Similarly:
1m3* (10003 mm3/1 m3)=1*109 mm3

A theoretical explanation on my part would have been unclear, so I hope these examples help illustrate the correct method.
