Re: Dipole moments
A dipole moment is a measure of a molecule's polarity. Differences in electronegativity, or charge differences, result in an unsymmetrical distribution of electrons, which is shown as a net dipole moment.
Re: Dipole moments
A dipole is a positive charge next to an equal but opposite negative charge. A dipole moment (μ) is the magnitude of the dipole.

Re: Dipole moments
Dipole moments can occur between ions in an ionic bond or atoms in a covalent bond. They occur when atoms in a molecule share electrons unequally, which occurs because one atom is more electronegative than the other. The more electronegative atom pulls more tightly on the shared electrons, creating a separation of charge that results in a dipole moment.

Re: Dipole moments
A dipole moment is a measurement of the separation of two opposite electrical charges.

Re: Dipole moments
1. What is dipole? Between atoms connected by a covalent bond, due to the difference in the electronegativity, atoms share electrons unevenly. The atom with a larger electronegativity attracts electron more strongly and becomes partially negative, while the atom with a smaller electronegativity attracts electrons less strongly and become partially positive. Then we call the two atoms dipoles.
2. What is dipole moment? The measure of the electrical polarity of a system of charges. The formula is μ=qd (q means the electric charges and d means the distance between the centers of positive and negative charged ions). But I don't think we will use this formula frequently in this class. The measurement of dipole moments can also indicate the molecular structures of molecules.

Re: Dipole moments
In addition to what has already been said, if the dipole moments around a molecule are equal (cancel each other out), the molecule is non polar. If the dipole moments are not equal (do not cancel each other out), the molecule is polar.
