### Inert gases

Can someone please explain why adding inert gases to a chamber of wouldn't shift the reaction to either direction? Wouldn't adding inert gas reduce the volume available to the other gases in the chamber?

### Re: Inert gases

The volume occupied by the gas atoms is extremely small compared to the container volume, therefore adding an inert gas has little effect on the volume available.

Good question. Introduce yourself after class.

### Re: Inert gases

Also when an inert gas is added to a system in equilibrium in a rigid container aka constant volume, the concentration of the respective products and reactants does not change. However, the total pressure of the system will increase by adding the inert gas.
