2-43e tungsten e- config

Postby JennyCKim1J » Mon Oct 30, 2017 5:43 pm

On 2-43, shouldn't ground state e- config of tungsten be [Xe]4f^14 5d^5 6s^2 because tungsten originally has ... 5d^4 and it takes e- to make 5d^5? (Answer on the solution is [Xe]4f^14 5d^4 6s^2.)

That wouldn’t be the ground state because it would have too many electrons. You only need 74 electrons but if [Xe]4f^14 5d^5 6s^2 is your configuration you would have 75 electrons. Also I think the only times you make it into d^5 by removing an electron from the s orbital is for chromium.
So basically your electron configuration would be [Xe]4f^14 5d^4 6s^2.
