Resonance Structures for the Midterm

Postby deeksha1I » Wed Nov 08, 2017 8:31 pm

On the midterm, would we have to draw all the resonance structures if they just as for a Lewis structure, and not specifically the resonance structures? Or do we just draw the most stable structure?
Thanks!

I think we just draw the most stable structure based on formal charge unless the problem specifically asks for resonance structures. I am not entirely sure, though.

Based on principle of resonance, all resonance structures will have the same formal charge. Thus, it should not matter which structure you draw because they will all have the same formal charge, unless the question specifically asks you to draw multiple resonance structures.

The questions will be very specific, either asking you to draw the most stable structure or just one resonance structure, etc.
