Coordination Compounds hold certain biological importance but in terms of ligands what are their basic function/importance?

Basically a coordination compound involves a metal atom surrounded by nonmetal atoms. The nonmetal atoms connected to the metal atom are called ligands.

And the number of ligand that a metal can have differ on what? the number of valence electrons/bond number?
