Use of symbols

Postby Yasmin Rizal 1C » Sun Oct 30, 2016 9:53 pm

For quizzes/midterms will I be penalized for using different symbols to denote certain quantities? E.g. I'm more used to writing energy as rather than , since for me is velocity (speed) and is frequency.

Will this be a problem when my papers are graded?

Since the TA's are probably grading it, I'd suggest you shoot a quick email to one of them and see what they say. When in doubt, though, just use v instead of f. You'll get an equation sheet and it'll be written that way on the sheet as well, so just double check with that.

If you are using slightly different symbols, you should make sure to define what each symbol is representing on the top of the blank space... As long as you do that, I don't see any reason for you to lose points. But also reach out to your TA, just in case

I would stick to what symbols are used on the equation sheet we are given.

It is standard convention for frequency to be defined by v as it is, but if you indicate your dilemma to your TA and write it at the top of your page there shouldn't be any reason for concern!

All the best!

You definitely should ask your TA because they are the ones grading, but I would say go with v because that is standard.

If it helps, you could write out the whole problem in a way that you are comfortable with, and then change your variable afterwards.
