### Pi Bonds vs. Sigma Bonds

When looking at molecule, how do you determine if it forms a pi bond, sigma bond, or neither?

### Re: Pi Bonds vs. Sigma Bonds

Overall all single bonds are sigma bonds and in double or triple bonds. All bonds except the first one are pi bonds. So a double bond has 1 pi bond and a triple bond has 2 pi bonds. Both double and triple bonds have 1 sigma bond.

### Re: Pi Bonds vs. Sigma Bonds

Sigma bonds are always the first bonds that form. Pi bonds are all the bonds after that. So the second and triple bond are pi bonds and the first bond is still a sigma bond.

a single bond has a sigma bond, a double bond has a sigma bond and a pi bond, and a triple bond has a sigma bond and 2 pi bonds

### Re: Pi Bonds vs. Sigma Bonds

The first bonds are known as sigma bonds and the rest of the bonds are pi bonds. For example, when there is a triple bond, the first is a sigma bond and the 2nd and 3rd bonds are pi bonds.

### Re: Pi Bonds vs. Sigma Bonds

Sigma bonds are free to rotate and change orientation, while pi bonds are locked in place since they have two points of interference.

### Re: Pi Bonds vs. Sigma Bonds

Sigma bonds are the FIRST bonds to be made between two atoms. They are made from hybridized orbitals. Pi bonds are the SECOND and THIRD bonds to be made. They are made from leftover "p" orbitals

Single bonds are sigma bonds. Double bonds are a sigma bond and a pi bond. Triple bonds are a sigma bond and 2 pi bonds.
