naming compounds

Postby Stephanie tran 1J » Sat Dec 02, 2017 3:06 pm

Which part of the compound when naming it is the lewis acid? Is it the central metal atom? Also, when naming compounds with polydentates, do we have to know more than what is listed in table 17.4 like other than en, dien, and edta?

For naming compounds, you should focus on knowing monodentate, and the polydentades; bidentate, tridentate: dien, and the hexadentate: edta.

The transition metal, which is the central metal atom, is the Lewis acid and it accepts electron pairs. This element comes last in the naming process. The surrounding ligands are Lewis bases and they are the electron donors.

The above answers are correct! Also take note that you will need to know how to draw the ligands listed in that table (with the exception of EDTA).
