Lone Pairs in Hybridization

Postby Kelly Kiremidjian 1C » Mon Nov 27, 2017 8:38 pm

Can anyone explain how to write the hybridization of a compound with a lone pair? Does hybridization rely solely on the amount of regions of electron density or just the number of bonds excluding lone pairs?

thanks

It solely relies on the amount of areas of electron density, including the lone pairs

It is important to take into account everything around the central atom. For example, the number of bonds and lone pairs. Knowing what the central atom is surrounded by helps with the hybridization of the compound.

Since hybridization relies only on areas of electron density, lone pairs count, but keep in mind that double and triple bonds only count as one area of electron density

lone pairs are included and double/triple bonds are only counted as one area of electron density
