pH and pOH

Postby 904940852 » Sat Dec 02, 2017 11:45 pm

What is the difference between pH and pOH, what do they do, and how do you calculate them?

The pH scale measures the H+ concentration while the pOH scale measures the OH- concentration. Depending on which value you are given, one way to calculate the pH or the pOH of a solution is pH + pOH = 14.

pH represents the concentration of H+ while pOH is a measure of concentration of OH-. You would calculate the value by taking the -log of concentration of the substance.

The pH measures the [H+] while pOH measures [OH-]. You start of by taking the -log of one of the concentration either [H+] or [OH-] and then to solve for the other concentration then use the following equation; pH+pOH=14.

Dr. Lavelle's lecture went over pH and pOH but additionally watching this video may help. It gives a clear explanation.

If the ph or pOH is 7, is the solution considered neutral, neither acidic nor neutral?

If the pH is 7, the pOH has to be 7, and so they would be neutral. Neither the pH or the pOH would be favored in hydrogen ion concentration, so it would be no more acidic than it is basic.

what does the "p" in pH stand for? does it have some significance?

The p in pH will stand for potential, potential hydrogen

Why is it more common to measure the pH of something rather than the pOH?

pH is used more often because it is easier to measure the amount of H3O+ than of -OH
