Weak Acids and Bases

Postby Iris Shim 1E » Sun Dec 03, 2017 10:44 pm

What does it mean for an acid or base to disassociate completely? How does that affect the reaction and its equilibrium?

When strong acids or bases are dissolved in water, they are fully protonated, meaning the most of the protons are dissociated with acids and accepted by bases. Since strong acids and bases tend to be fully protonated in water and the reactions tend to shift right, the equilibrium constants of the reactions are large.

Strong acid or base can disassociate completely, which means there will only be one arrow toward the right.
