Heating Curve

Postby Tiffany Cao 1D » Fri Jan 12, 2018 2:07 pm

In a heating curve, the enthalpies of fusion and vaporization are depicted as straight, horizontal lines. However, which element or characteristic of the heating curve gives information about heat capacities?

On the heating curve, the sloped lines represent heat capacity

The steepness of the slope is related to the heat capacity. The steeper the slope, the lower the heat capacity is and vice versa.

Does the length of the sloped lines indicate anything? Or is it just based on the steepness?

The length of the lines of the heating curves also represents the amount of heat needed to change the state of the substance. The longer the line, the more heat is required, indicating that the heat capacity is higher.

The length of the sloped lines will just represent the time it takes(horizontal) or the amount of temperature change after a phase change(vertical)

I think the length of the heating curve just represents the time it takes to reach a specific temperature.
