Types of Systems

What is the difference between a closed and isolated system?

An isolated system has no interaction with its surroundings whatsoever, while a closed system has a fixed amount of matter, but can exchange energy with its surroundings. A good example of a closed system is something like an ice pack, and a good example of an isolated system is something sealed off by vacuum. Hope that helps!

Also for reference, an open system can exchange both matter and energy with its surroundings (e.g. a car engine).

An isolated system doesn't let anything in or out like a really good thermos but a closed system allows things of matter to pass such as heat. An example of a closed system is mercury in a thermometer.

A closed system is able to interact with its surroundings and exchange energy such as heat. However, an isolated system is completely independent and doesn't interact with its surroundings.

In a closed system, there is an exchange of energy but not matter. The example in the book given is a refrigerator coil. This is a closed system because the coil cools the refrigerator through the transfer of energy. There is no exchange of the fluid, however, In contrast, in an isolated system, there is no exchange of matter or energy. An example would be a thermus bottle that is very well insulated. It will stay at the temp (because of the insulation) meaning there is no transfer of energy. There is also no transfer of matter as the liquid when its closed stays in the bottle.

an Isolated system can not exchange heat with its surroundings, but a closed system can. Neither system can exchange matter with its surroundings

If the matter cannot be transferred through the boundary but energy can be exchanged with the surroundings, then that is a closed system. For an isolated system, neither energy nor matter can be exchanged with the surroundings.

Is there a type of system which somehow exchanges particles but not heat? Or is this impossible?

^^I don't think so. The textbook only defines open, closed, and isolated systems.
