Week 3 Test

Does anybody know, in terms of the assigned homework for this chapter, what numbered problems correlate to what we are actually being tested on in Week 3?, Professor has talked about omitting part of the chapter, the part he is teaching next week, but what numbered problems should I be doing to prepare myself for Week 3's Test?

In terms of numbered problems, the only ones I see that have isothermal reversible expansion are 8.11 part B and 8.12 part B, so just omit those.

Test 1: I have decided that we need to do more examples and you need more time for ‘work’ and ‘energy’. :-)

Calculations involving work and internal energy will not be on Test 1.

Concept questions involving work and internal energy will be on Test 1, but not calculating w and delta U.

Also, anything involving bond enthalpies, enthalpies of formation, and calculating energy from a calorimeter will be on the test.

I would focus more on the concepts of work and internal energy as well as calculating enthalpy and heat. This includes: the different methods of solving for enthalpy, calorimeter calculations. Don't worry about the equations that you need to calculate the actual work and internal energy. Hope this helps!

Does anyone know if the born-haber cycle will be tested? There is a whole section on it in the chapter but we have not talked about it in class

After going through the homework I noticed numbers 3-13,25-31, and 47-49 all have to do with calculating work or internal energy. I would suggest studying all the other homework problems specifically for this upcoming test.

We won't be required to solve for internal energy, I believe, but there will probably be concept questions on it.

For the most part, Dr. Lavelle covers everything we should know for the test conceptually with some examples, but it's definitely recommended to prepare by doing the homework while also reviewing notes!

Dr. Lavelle usually includes a homework problem or one that is very similar to the homework in his tests, so it can be pretty similar. In general I find it really helpful to do the homework! If anything, sometimes the homework can be less straightforward than test problems.

In 14A it was pretty much if he didn't cover the topic in class then we do not need to know it for the test. The HW problems are pretty good indicators of what he will test on.

These equations are included on the constants and equations worksheet. We would likely just need to know how to apply them.

On the syllabus, it says, "Homework problems will be included in tests and exams"! And I believe I saw somewhere that said at least 1 homework problem will be on the test? Either way, doing the homework always helps for Lavelle's tests!

There are no calculations on heat and internal energy but you do have to understand the concepts.

I think for example he could give you a scenario where the walls between the system and the surroundings are adiabatic. Then, it could be true/false for a series of things like:
