Is there a way specific way to approach into seeing if open closed or isolated?
Is there a specific way to figure out if a real life example is open closed or isolated? Some of the examples get harder, but i understand what each one of them is .

I think you should just look at whether or not energy is moving from one place to another. If it is then the system is closed and if not then it is an isolated system.

To elaborate on what Ryan said, a closed system allows the movement of energy but not mass. An open system allows the movement of energy and mass.

First, determine what the system and its surroundings are. Then figure out whether mass and energy can be transferred from the system to its surroundings and vice versa.

Open system has transfer of heat and material; closed system has transfer of heat but not the transfer of material; isolated system has no transfer of heat or material.

for example a pot on the oven with no lid is open, a pot on the oven with a lid is closed, and a really good thermal cup wouldn't allow for the transfer of energy or matter so it would be isolated

Dr. Lavelle's Examples:
Open: beaker of water because water can evaporate and no insulation is involved
Closed: sealed beaker of water because no evaporation or insulation is involved
Isolated: combustion of glucose I na bomb calorimeter because nothing is exchanged with the surroundings

you should always consider if first energy is being transferred such as heat/work then it narrows down the possible systems to the open or closed system. after you have to consider if matter is being transferred from the system to the surrounding.

I think the only real way to tell is if it's a concealed system or not. Then if it's thermally-insulated or the like. It's hard to determine it with any "specific way" or any tricks.
