Heat capacity tells you the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a substance by 1 degree Celsius/1 Kelvin. A large heat capacity suggests that a large amount of energy is required to raise the temperature by 1 degree Celsius. Since heat capacity is an extensive property (depends on mass), specific heat capacity was introduced as it is intensive.

This relates to specific heat capacity as this is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance by 1 degree celsius. A large heat capacity, much like water, tells us that the substance needs a fairly large amount of energy to raise the temperature by 1 degree celsius.
