Can someone explain why a car engine is an open system?

The engine requires gasoline and oxygen which are matter. It also dissipates heat. Since both matter and energy can enter/leave the system, it is considered open.

You must input gasoline to make it run and heat is released when the car is running therefore an engine is an open system.

Since gasoline is inputted into the engine and stuff is also outputted(heat/gas), it is an open system.

Open systems are defined by an exchange of both mass and energy between the system and surroundings. In this case, physical mass is consumed in order to power the machine, while heat is emitted. Car hoods often heat up, showing that coolant systems do not fully insulate the system.
