Add H+ or OH-

Postby Joanne Guan 1B » Sun Feb 18, 2018 5:37 pm

In Example 14.1 in the book, the solution adds H+ to balance the extra H+ from the H2O. In Example 14.2, the solution adds OH- instead. How do you know whether to add H+ or OH-?

14.1 was in an acidic solution while 14.2 was in a basic solution, so you have to know whether it is an acidic or basic solution when doing the problem.

You add H+ ions to redox reactions in acidic solution and OH- ions to redox reactions in basic solutions.
