Acidic vs. Basic

Postby Nicole 1F » Mon Feb 19, 2018 1:00 am

Will all the questions on the test be under acidic conditions? If not, how do you know the number of H2O and H+ molecules you add under acidic conditions and how many H2O and OH- molecules you add when the reaction is under basic conditions?

My TA said that the questions on the test won't necessarily be given all in acidic conditions. To find out how many H+, H2O, and OH- to add, you'd have to find the oxidation numbers and charges of both sides of the equation, and then add the necessary ions and water molecules to balance the equation on both sides.

Also, I found it very helpful to read how the book explains the difference in balancing acidic and basic equations on pages 563-569
