H+ or H3O+
So, my TA said to use the hydronium ion (H3O+) when balancing the hydrogen atoms, but the book says to use just a plain hydrogen ion. Does it matter which one we use?

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to use H+ (at least thats what my TA said) but I guess as long as you balance both H and O atoms then you should be fine.

As Lavelle pointed out it lecture today, you can use either.

Re: H+ or H3O+
I think the H+ is the part that matters if its taking place in an acidic solution, but H30 is the technical substance that is being formed.
