units of the rate of reaction

are the units of rate always the same ( M/s)? and is it just the units of k that change when the order of reaction changes?

Re: units of the rate of reaction

Yes the reaction rate is usually determined by concentration (M) divided by time which could be seconds or minutes, hours, etc. k only has different units because you may be multiplying and dividing multiple units of (M/s) together

So what are the units of K, or do the units of K vary?

The units of k vary depending on the order of the reaction.

units for k0: mol.L-1.s-1
units for k1: s-1
units for k2: L.mol-1.s-1

Re: units of the rate of reaction

The units of the rate of reaction,K, is solely dependent on the order of the reaction. A zero order reaction will have the units M/s, a first order reaction will have the units of 1/s, a second order reaction will have the units of 1/Ms.

Re: units of the rate of reaction

The units of the rate of the reaction (k) depends on the order of the reaction and the corresponding rate law.

0 order: rate=k, units (1/s)
1st order: rate=k[R], units (L/mol x s)
2nd order: rate=k[R]^2, units (L^2/mol^2 x s)

Re: units of the rate of reaction

theres a pattern to it as you can see in the previous responses so for 2nd reaction the L and mol gets raised to 2nd power and 3rd reaction gets raised to 3rd power and so on; seconds remain just seconds
