how to write a cell diagram
what is the order in which we are supposed to write the cell diagram? Our TA told us to write reactants first then products but that doesnt seem to match the solution manual

So the order is typically Inert Metal (if applicable) | (Anode reactant) | (anode product) || (Cathode reactant) | (cathode product)| (Inert Metal if applicable).

For cell diagram, within each half part, electrode and solids are written far away from the salt bridge, followed by liquid, gas and aqueous solution. Within each phase, orders are not strictly defined, but people tend to put in the order of reactant to product.

How come in the textbook pg 575 when the order of the galvanic cell | (Anode reactant) | (anode product) || (Cathode reactant) | (cathode product)| is flipped so that the cathode is on the left the voltage is negative, even when the electrons are still flowing from anode to cathode?

Then how come for problem 14.11 the cathode reactant and the cathode product is switched so that Cl- is before Cl2?

My TA said that the order is not always followed that way. For the purpose of this class, I don't think the order will be stressed upon.

Re: how to write a cell diagram
Have the anode then cathode. The inert metals should be on the outside. besides that dont stress
Re: how to write a cell diagram
Yeah for example for 6M.1, they give the half reactions and Cu^2+|Cu is written, but then in the full diagram it is written M(s)|M+(aq)||Cu^2+(aq)|Cu(s), and they say that the Cu^2+ is the anode, but how is that? On the full cell diagram it is on the right so is that not the cathode?
This is the full question:
6M.1 A student was given a standard Cu(s)uCu21(aq) half-cell and another half-cell containing an unknown metal M in 1.00 m M(NO3)2(aq) and formed the cell M(s)uM1(aq)uuCu21(aq)uCu(s). The cell potential was found to be 20.689 V. What is the value of E8(M21/M)?
