How do you know which side to put H+ on?

We need to first balance the half reaction. If there is oxygen on one side of the half reaction, then add H2O on the other side to balance the oxygen, and then add H+ (if the reaction happens in acidic solution) on the side of oxygen to balance the hydrogen in H20.

If this half-reaction is an oxidation reaction, it happens at the anode side, so we put the H+ on the left side of the cell diagram, as it indicates the anode/oxidation half-reaction. Vise Versa.

Hope this helps!
