Will we need to know how to derive equations?

Postby Wilson Yeh 1L » Fri Mar 02, 2018 3:59 pm

For the final, will we need to know how to derive kinetic equations? Like using calculus to change the form of a given equation? Thanks!

yes, I think we do.

I don't think we'll directly be asked to derive anything, but I'm sure we'll need to know how to derive in order to get the equation we need to solve the problem. Knowing how to derive will probably be more helpful than just memorizing.

Since there are equations that are easier to use to solve for some problems that come from derivations from the equations that are given, you technically need to know how to derive them, but I dont think we would be tested on actually deriving them

Dr. Lavelle has stated multiple times that he won't ever ask straight up derivation of equation questions on exams, however do review how and where each equation comes from because a combination of equations might need to be used to come up with the equation you would need for a particular test question.

While Dr. Lavelle has said that he wouldn't directly ask us to derive equations in the past, it would be a good idea to know how to derive the order of reaction equations.

Knowing the derivations can only help you not hurt you!

Will we need to know how to derive the equation involving kforward divided by kreverse

I'm sure Lavelle's exams don't have any sort of derivations on them. He could switch it up this year though

It is important to understand the origin of the equations, and you could be asked for a derivation on the exam. Understanding the concepts of the derivation may help you answer conceptual questions!
