### Integrated Rate Law

Dr. Lavelle mentioned how for the integrated rate law, we consider only the reactant (which is why it's usually expressed in terms of loss of [A], a reactant). However, in the book, it says the integrated rate law can be used to find the concentration of reactant or product at any time. Should we just focus on the reactants then?

The specific integrate rate laws that we have found are integrated using the rate of loss of reactants. The short answer to your question is yes. However, there could be problems (similar to #23 (part c)) where you are given the concentration of the product and the molar ratio of products to reactants. In these problems, you could use the molar ratio to find the amount of reactant used up and from that find the concentration of reactant that is left. You would then use this value in your original integrated rate equations.

I would look at 15.23 (c), 15.29 (b), and 15.39 (b) as examples for these type of problems

It is possible with products, but in this class, our primary focus is on the reactants in rate laws because if there are products present, the reverse reaction may occur, which would complicate the calculations of the rate of reaction.
