### Endothermic/exothermic

On the first quiz there was a question regarding heat exchange and release I had trouble understanding if you use endothermic/exothermic to answer these or just common knowledge such as the sun heats up water during evaporation therefore there is heat exchange.

### Re: Endothermic/exothermic

Regarding the question about the sun, you would know that there is heat exchange because the sun is causing the water to evaporate - it's transferring Joules of energy into the water to the point where the water reaches Hvap.

As far as processes being exothermic or endothermic, for the sun the process would be exothermic - it's releasing heat - and for the water the process would be endothermic - it's taking up heat.

### Re: Endothermic/exothermic

A process is exothermic when it releases heat and a process is endothermic when it absorbs heat.

### Re: Endothermic/exothermic

You would use common knowledge to understand if something is heating up or not. And using that, we can determine if something is endothermic (takes heat), or exothermic (loses heat) in regards to each term in a reaction.

### Re: Endothermic/exothermic

Exothermic processes give off heat while endothermic processes absorb heat. It is important to identify which you consider to be the system and which are the surroundings.
