Sig Figs

Postby Brynne Keyser 1B » Fri Apr 06, 2018 12:22 pm

Do we need to always use significant figures on tests and homework assignments?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Brynne!

From what I understood during my discussion section points will not be taken off if we don't use the correct number of significant figures; however, you shouldn't give too many numbers after the decimal point either (like 10 for example). If I remember correctly my teaching assistant told us to aim for 3 numbers after the decimal point.

I hope this helps :)

I agree with Anna. Also scientific notation can really come in handy sometimes for significant figures. :)
Hope this helps!

My TA said always use three sig figs for tests but said she doesn't dock points for it on homework.

While the TAs may not grade homework based on significant figures, you will need to use the correct number of significant figures on the exams, so it would be a good idea to become comfortable with it on the homework. However, for the first test, you will not lose points on significant figures.

No. Someone asked Lavelle if significant figures matter on tests, and he said no.

Hey Brynne!
You will not need sig figs for test 1 but probably will need them in the future, Lavelle just said this in lecture today.

I just want to clarify the above statement. Lavelle said you will not need to know significant figures for the first test. This is because he wants you to be comfortable with using them first. You will be expected to use them for future tests and exams.

Hi!
So just to be clear, significant figures will definitely start counting for points on the exams starting with the second in discussion exam?

Thanks

I think significant figures don't matter too much as long as you have the correct answer. And if it does for tests, they will not deduct too many points.
