Theoretical Yield

Postby Haya Rabadi 1F » Sat Apr 14, 2018 8:56 pm

Can someone clarify how we come up with the value for theoretical yield?

1. Find the amount in moles from the given mass.
2. Then with the mole ratio in the chemical equation, convert the amount of the amount in moles from step 1 to amount in moles of the other reactant.
3. Then convert the amount in moles from step 2 to mass.

Do you mind explaining the ratio part of calculating theoretical yield? When calculating do you just multiply the amount of moles from step you to the ratio?

The theoretical yield is the amount of moles of product in grams. To calculate the theoretical yield, the steps for solving the limiting reactant of an equation must be completed, such that being the moles of the reactant are compared to the required moles. After making this comparison, the limiting reactant is the element that does not have an excess of moles available. This in mind, the moles of the limiting reactant is converted to grams to find the theoretical yield.

Do they have to give you the actual yield to calculate the percent theoretical yield?

Yes, for percent yield you need to know both the actual and the theoretical yield.
