Units - L or mL?
I know the standard unit to use is Liters, but if the question gives you units in milliliters should we give our answer back in it? Thanks.

Re: Units - L or mL?
If you are giving the answer in mL, make sure you label it, but it is usually better to give your answer in Liters.

Re: Units - L or mL?
I believe it is preferred to give an answer in Liters rather than mL unless asked otherwise

Re: Units - L or mL?
The answer usually should be in L. If it is given to you in mL, it is usually easier to multiply it by 10^-3.

Re: Units - L or mL?
When you're using the conc=moles/vol, you need to use liters. But when you you're using the M1V1=M2V2 equation, you just need to keep all of the units the same, so essentially you can use mL instead of L.
Re: Units - L or mL?
As long as your answer is correct and you specify which units your answer is in (mL or L) I don't think it matters what you put your answer in unless they specify that they want your answer in specific units.

It just depends on what they are asking for. Usually it is in L. But if it is in ml then switch to L.

It does not matter as long as you have the correct units and are specifying the correct amount. If the question says to specify in terms of certain units, you must have those units.

If it gives you are given milliliters then you change it to liters and I believe you keep the final answer in Liters too.

Re: Units - L or mL?
L is definitely more preferred. all the solutions in the solutions manual convert from mL to L unless the problem states that the answer should be in mL.

I believe that once you convert mL to L at the beginning of the problem, you should keep it as Liters at the end of the problem.

Re: Units - L or mL?
This question was just asked by someone today in class. Professor Lavelle stated that the answer can be given in either liter or mililiters unless it is specifically specified to give it in a certain unit.

Re: Units - L or mL?
It might be important to consider how the units fit with the answer itself too. If you have a minuscule amount, it's probably better to write the answer in mL to avoid dealing with scientific notation and all that.
Plus, it's more practical for a real life lab situation. You generally wouldn't tell someone to measure out 2.0x10^-3 L, while 2.0 mL would be a lot easier to communicate in a lab setting. Of course, we're just in a classroom now, so It doesn't really make much of a difference.

Re: Units - L or mL?
In order to compute dilations correctly, you will need to convert the volume of the given quantities to Liters, however if the known volumes in the question are given in milliliters then I would convert back to the unit of mL at the end of the answer. This is the format that the online Video Module Post / Pre Assessment Questions were formatted also.
