Electron Configuration of Br-

Postby Kendall Schemmer 1I » Sat Dec 09, 2017 4:11 pm

The electron configuration of Br- is [Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p6. However, would it also be correct to write it as just [Kr]?

Yes it would be correct to just write as [Kr] if they ask for the shorthand of it.

Definitely make sure to ask your instructors which notation they prefer beforehand.

When dealing with anions and cations how do we distinguish their electron configurations from other elements?

I think it would be correct, but make sure to ask your TA maybe.

Presenting the electron configuration of Br- as [Kr] would be correct, but keep in mind that they may be expecting you to give the full electron configuration rather than just the shorthand.

[Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p6 is the preferred notation because chemistry (valence electron interactions) of Br- ion actually is better represented this way than a stable Kr atom which is represented by [Kr].
