Radius

Postby veneziaramirez 3I » Wed Nov 08, 2017 12:35 am

What is the difference between an atomic and ionic radius?

The atomic radius of an element is half the distance between the centers of neighboring atoms while ionic radius is its share of the distance between neighboring ions in an ionic solid.

However, when comparing radii, you would use the same trend whether its atomic, ionic, or covalent radii.

All radii generally follow the same trend on the periodic table.

Both atomic radius and ionic radius decrease across a period.
With ionic radius, the cations decrease then the anions decrease.

In a neutral atom the atomic and ionic radii are the same but if there are cations and anions the electron loses a shell and the ionic radius becomes smaller.

The ionic radius is between ionic compound, such as NaCl, KCl.
Atomic radius is between neighbouring atoms, for example metal Mg, Fe
By the way, covalent radius measn 2 nonmetal joined by the covalent bond, eg, oxygen, Nitrogen
Howeverever, dont care much about it because all radiuses follow the same trend, which is increase down the group and decrease across the perios.
Hope it helps!
