I don't understand why we don't count other orbitals when finding the number of orbitals inside of a sub shell. For part b in 2.17, l=2 so we know that it goes to the d orbital which has 5 spaces to fill. And the answer is 5 orbitals. But what about the s orbital and p orbital that comes before it? My instinct was to include those and add them all together, why is that wrong?
I believe for this part it's because they give you the angular momentum quantum # (l). Since they told you l=2, like you said you know it would be the d subshell. Because they told you l=2 you're only looking at that particular subshell not including the s or p.
Kara is right! so if they did not give you the l value and just told you n=3 that's when you would include the orbitals in the s and p but since they gave you the l value its a little more specific than just saying all the orbitals in period 3.
