Why is it that we can't know both position and momentum?

This is because electrons at any given moment aren't in an exact position and direction of movement simultaneously.

According to the Uncertainith Principle, every particle has a wave associated with it, so it exhibits a wavelike behavior. A particle wave having a well-defined wavelength will be spread out, so the velocity will be precise but not the position. A strictly localized wave has an indeterminate wavelength, so the position is defined and velocity is unknown.
