I am well aware on how to find quantum numbers, but I am just a little confused about the last quantum number which determines the magnetic spin? Why is magnetic spin important and how does it affect atoms? And how do we solve for it, or is it always given?
The fourth quantum number is used two indicate the orientation of the two electrons in each orbital. The possible values are +1/2 and -1//2. The fourth quantum number relates back to the Pauli principle that states that no two electrons in the same atom may have identical values for all four quantum numbers. This means that the two electrons must have opposite spins. The fourth quantum number is important because it determines an atom's ability to generate a magnetic field or not.
