## Writing Balanced Equations

$\Delta G^{\circ}= \Delta H^{\circ} - T \Delta S^{\circ}$

$\Delta G^{\circ}= -RT\ln K$

$\Delta G^{\circ}= \sum \Delta G_{f}^{\circ}(products) - \sum \Delta G_{f}^{\circ}(reactants)$

### Writing Balanced Equations

When writing balanced equations in order to calculate Gibbs free energy from the Gibbs free energy of formation of the products and reactants, how do we know whether to use full integers to balance equations or fractions.

For example, on problem 9.59, 2 Fe3O4 (s) + O2 (g) ---> 3 Fe2O3 was balanced to be 2 Fe3O4 (s) + 1/2 O2 (g) ---> 3 Fe2O3 rather than 4 Fe3O4 (s) + O2 (g) ---> 6 Fe2O3. How do we know which way to balance equations?

Hi,
Either way it shouldn't matter, because I believe Gibbs free energy is measured in J/mol, so as long as you end up solving for the value per 1 mol, you should be fine.
