Cell Diagram for equations with 1 reactant

Postby Joyce Zhang 2D » Fri Feb 10, 2017 1:44 pm

How do I determine which is the anode and which is the cathode for cell diagrams from equations with 1 reactant. Specifically question 14.13d, wherethe solution manual puts Au(s) on the left side even though it is only involved in the cathode reducing half reaction??

In the problem you are referring to, Au+ is oxidized and reduced. Therefore, Au+ will appear in both the oxidation half reaction and the reduction half reaction. This Au+ will appear on the left side for both of these half reactions.
