Excited electrons returning to initial energy level

It is understandable that when an electron is excited, due to its absorption of a photon, it jumps up to a specific energy level. Something is acting both specifically and directly on that electron, so it moves up in energy level. But it has also been said that, eventually, the electron moves back to its initial energy level and emits the same kind of energy that excited it. I am curious as to what it is that causes the electron to return. Because the nucleus is further away, it would seem less likely that the more minimal attraction between the electron and nucleus would be what causes the electron to come back. Even so, is it through this constant attraction to the positively charged nucleus that causes the electron to return, or does something entirely different cause this?

It is as you state (which I underlined) and as I discussed in class.
The electrostatic attraction of the positively charged nucleus on the negatively charged electron results in the electron returning to its lower energy ground state.
