### Difference between orbitals

I was wondering what distinguishes s, p, d, and f orbitals from each other. Is it their energy levels or something else?

### Re: Difference between orbitals

The number denotes the energy level of the electron in the orbital. The letter refers to the shape of the orbital.

### Re: Difference between orbitals

The shapes are... s is a "sphere", p is a "propeller", d is a "daisy" and f is irrelevant right now

### Re: Difference between orbitals

A helpful tip and very important concept to know is that orbitals can be determined by l. As when l=0, it is the s orbital. And so on until it reaches l=3 being the f orbital.

L 0 =s orbital
1= p orbital
2= d orbital
3= f orbital

I hope this helps. Please correct me if I am wrong in certain places and explanation.
