Types of Bonds
Hi Everyone,
I am a bit confused on the
and the
. I get that they are two different types of bonds and that they occur when to elements bond, but I don't quite understand what the difference is between the two? What makes them different?

Re: Types of Bonds
Hello!
The difference between the two bonds is from how the orbitals overlap. Sigma bonds occur when orbitals overlap from end to end. It kind of resembles a Venn diagram. Pi bonds occur when orbitals overlap from side to side.

Re: Types of Bonds
Sigma bonds allow more flexibility for molecules to change shape. Pi bonds make molecules more rigid.

Re: Types of Bonds
Sigma bonds allow atoms to rotate independently of each other, but pi bonds don't.

Re: Types of Bonds
Sigma bonds allow molecules to rotate while pi bonds do not which means that if there is more than one bond (double or triple) there must be pi bonds because if the atoms were to rotate it would need to break a bond to change the chemical composition of the molecule

Re: Types of Bonds
A sigma bond is a single bond and the rest from there are pi bonds, because there can only be one sigma bond between two molecules. Therefore, double and triple bonds are pi bonds.

I was confused by this too, so here's a helpful website with images of what the bonds look like to demonstrate the different overlapping properties: https://sites.google.com/site/ed350201003/Task
